Honoring George Floyd and All Others Lost to Injustice

UCMT Recommits to Good Policing

Regardless of Federal and State Actions

On the 5th anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Unity Community Mediation Team (UCMT) continues on the path begun with their 2003 Memorandum of Agreement with Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and the City of Minneapolis.  “Unity Community Mediation Team remains committed to transparency and accountability for both police and community,” said Ian D. Bethel, Chair of the UCMT and Co-Chair of the Police Community Relations Council.   “We remain committed to the full implementation of our 2003 Memorandum of Agreement and our 2022 Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Minneapolis.  We support the State’s findings and Federal findings that have led to the state settlement agreement and the federal consent decree.   We will continue to work with all our community partners, the City, MPD, and ELEFA to not just reform, but to transform public safety in our city.”

UCMT is working actively toward full compliance with our MOU which, along with our MOA, provided government officials with the roadmap for transformation of public safety in Minneapolis.   UCMT’s Community Based Sites, located in leading organizations in the African American, Native American, Latino, Somali and LGBTQ communities are providing a way for all community members to come to the table and join in this transformational process, including filing complaints of police misconduct, mentoring new officers, mediating community disputes to prevent their escalation to criminal matters.   This work is a living memorial to George Floyd and all the others who have died in senseless violence in our City.
